I'm from Brasil, and the very first time I've listened to the 'Heavy Weather' album, I just went nuts with the bass and the bass player... Right now I've been playing the bass for 17 years, started in '85. When I heard Jaco's performance on the Heavy Weather album for the first time (it was in '88) it changed all my conception about the instrument, and about what the bass player should do.
It is a shame He isn't among us anymore, and shure it is a shame the way he left us... I wonder the contributions he could have made at this time, if he would be alive...

Dear Ingrid,
I met Jaco in 1972 at Uncle Sam's Night club in Atlanta, GA.. My band was The Divots from Roanoke VA. and we were the house band
for two weeks at Sam's. On Sunday nights they had guest artists. One Sunday it was Wayne Cochran and the CCRiders.
We really did not know who they where; just that they had ten horn players and a trio backing up Wayne. Well, when the bus pulled
up the band came in to set up their stuff. Their bass player saw my Acoustic 360 with two Cabs and asked me if he could use it
so he would not have to drag his off the bus. I said sure. Well, that night changed my bass life! Who was this guy and what
the heck was he playing? We talked on the breaks about family and music. He was missing his then wife Tracy, and I was missing my future wife NINA back in Roanoke.I told him about this really hot band that had been
practicing during the day at Sam's caled MOTHERS FINEST that had a really good bass player too, a guy called Wizard.
Well, I just wanted to share this little Jaco story with you. It is a privilege to write to you, Ingrid. Thanks for all you do

Can you help me? I met an employee at Chick's Harley-Davidson who,

I am 15 and have only been playing bass for 18 months.
I was introduced to Jaco's music firstly
by my dad's copy of Joni Mitchell's 'Mingus', and then my tutor, Greg showed me such songs as 'Come on, Come over' and 'Portrait of Tracy' which is the most beuatiful piece of music I have ever heard. I have since managed to hunt down a copy of Jaco's debut L.P and I love it. You only have to listen to the first few seconds of
'Donna Lee' as soon as you press play to realise Jaco was special.
There will never be anyone else like him
and we should all be very greatful God
gave us such a wonderful human being
who could share his gift of musical talent
to the world.

Hye, just to let you know, incase you already dont. I found a web site called jacos heaven (www.aic.se/basslob/jaco/).
It has one hundred and eighty pictures on it. Half or more that i have never seen before.
Some seem to be from the same film you have posted. Thank you. P.S. The first time I heard
one measure of music of jaco, it changed my whole perspective on my playing and life.

I'm a Bass player (BIG NEWS THERE). Though I never had the pleasure of meeting Jaco, many cats I've met in my travels had. There's a whole generation of us who wouldn't be what we are if not for him. Everything and everyone has a purpose. I thank God for giving us Jaco.
The full existent of Jaco's purpose may never be known but one thing is clear;
his spirit has, and will continue to effect the way people approach music in general.
His spirit affects even those who have never heard the name Pastorius.
This is evident in a recording by the popular R B group SWV.
The song 'Rain' is a rendition of 'Portrait of Tracy'. People who have heard this
song love it, but they have no clue of its origins.

Another misconception in Milkowski's book: On p. 143, citing similarities between Jaco and Ricky Sebastian
'Jaco and Sebastian had much in common. Both had been raised in the Deep South and had hung out with black musicians
when they were growing up'.
Despite its location, South Florida is not considered part of the Deep South because
it is predominantly populated by people from the northeast.
Culturally, South Florida is far removed from the Deep South.
Milkowski's comparison is, therefore invalid.

since I had back surgery last last year I had plenty of time to heal so I took up playing my bass that I had stored in my garage for over 20 years.I took bass lessons at a music store I noticed this picture on my teachers wall and I asked who is this guy? He is kneeling in front of his amps that is when he turned me on to Jcao. I have bought many of his music and I wish I could seen him play by far I like Jaco the best. His music is always fresh evertime I listen to him play I close my eyes and just imagine how it would have been to see him playing.

I am new to Jaco..amazing how much influence he has on my music already..some was just handed down without my even knowing of him...!!
I also suffer from a major depression Disorder and can REALLY RELATE to him on an entirely different plane...I only wish I could have known him and helped..but then we all must go through what God intends..Good,Bad,or Indifferent.
I have been trying to absorb as much as possible of Jaco since 'finding' him..I'll NEVER ever look at my music (Keyboards,guitar),or my illness in the same way....Thank you Jaco,I'll see you on the other side.
